Joseph and His Coat of Many Colors: The Story for Kids

A story about a special coat, some jealous brothers, and a boy who never stopped trusting that God had a plan — written to be read aloud to little ones ages 2 to 8.
Long, long ago, in the land of Canaan, there lived a boy named Joseph. Joseph had eleven brothers, but his father, Jacob, loved him in a special way. And one day, Jacob gave Joseph a gift he would never forget: a beautiful coat, woven with every color of the rainbow.
Red like ripe berries. Blue like the deep sea. Yellow like the morning sun. Green, purple, orange — every color you can imagine, all in one wonderful coat.
The jealous brothers
Joseph loved his coat and wore it everywhere. But when his older brothers saw it, their hearts went grumbly and sour. "Why does Father love him best?" they muttered. That grumbly feeling is called jealousy, and it grew and grew until the brothers could hardly stand to be kind to Joseph at all.
Joseph also had special dreams — dreams that seemed to say that one day his family would look up to him. When he told his brothers, they only grew more upset.
Have you ever felt jealous when someone got something you wanted? It's a hard feeling. Joseph's brothers let that feeling get so big that they did something very unkind.
Sold far from home
One day, when they were far out in the fields, the brothers took Joseph's beautiful coat and sold Joseph to some travelers heading to a faraway land called Egypt. Just like that, Joseph was carried far from home, away from his father and everything he knew.
It would have been easy for Joseph to give up hope. But even in a strange new place, Joseph kept trusting God. He worked hard. He was honest and kind. And wherever he went, people noticed that God was with him.
God's bigger plan
Here is the amazing part. Even though Joseph's brothers meant to hurt him, God was quietly working something good. Over many years, Joseph became a wise and trusted leader in Egypt — so trusted that the king put him in charge of saving food for a time when there would be none.
And when a great hunger came over the land, guess who traveled all the way to Egypt looking for food? Joseph's brothers. They did not even recognize him at first. But Joseph knew them. And instead of being angry, Joseph forgave them. "You meant to harm me," he said gently, "but God used it for good, to save many people."
What a thing to remember: even when a story starts out hard, God can still be writing something beautiful. And forgiveness can bring a whole family back together.

A note for parents
