Daniel and the Lions' Den: The Story for Kids (Free to Read and Listen)

A story about a brave man, a sneaky trick, and a den full of lions — written to be read aloud to little ones ages 3 to 8.

A long, long time ago, in a grand and busy kingdom called Babylon, the streets were full of wonderful things. Merchants called out about their colorful fabrics. Perfume sellers carried sweet-smelling oils from faraway lands. Children laughed and chased each other through the marketplace. And high above it all stood the palace of King Darius, its tall towers glimmering in the sunlight like a golden crown.

But in all that big, busy kingdom, there was one man who stood out. His name was Daniel.

Daniel, the man who prayed

Daniel wasn't loud or boastful. He carried a quiet kind of strength, the kind that comes from loving God with your whole heart. Every single day — when the sun came up, when it stood high in the sky at lunchtime, and when the stars came out at night — Daniel would kneel by his window and pray. He thanked God, asked for help, and told Him everything in his heart.

King Darius liked Daniel very much. Daniel was honest and wise, and he always did what was right. The king trusted him so much that he put Daniel in charge of almost the whole kingdom! "There is no one as loyal and wise as you, Daniel," the king would say.

But not everyone was happy about that.

The jealous men and their sneaky plan

Some of the other leaders in Babylon were jealous — that means they wanted what Daniel had, and it made their hearts feel grumbly and sour. Every time the king praised Daniel, their jealousy grew like a dark shadow.

They watched Daniel day and night, hoping to catch him doing something wrong. But they couldn't find a single thing! Daniel never lied. He never cheated. He was kind and fair to everyone.

Finally, one of them said, "We'll never catch him — unless it has to do with his God."

So they hurried to the palace with sly smiles and syrupy voices. "O mighty King Darius," they said, "you are the greatest ruler of all! You should make a new law: for thirty days, no one may pray to anyone but you. And anyone who breaks the law will be thrown into the lions' den!"

The king felt proud, and he didn't see the trap hiding inside their words. He signed the law. And in Babylon, once a law was signed, it could never, ever be changed — not even by the king himself.

Daniel's brave choice

When Daniel heard about the new law, his heart went thud. He knew exactly what it meant. If he kept praying to God, he would be thrown into a den full of hungry lions.

A little voice inside might have whispered, "Just close the window, Daniel. Pray in secret. No one will know."

But Daniel knew the truth: God was always with him, and he wasn't going to pretend to stop loving God — not out of fear, not for anything. So he went to his room, opened his window wide just like always, and knelt down to pray. "My Lord and my God," he said, "You give me strength and courage. I trust You."

Have you ever had to do the right thing even when it felt scary? That's called courage — and that's exactly what Daniel had.

The jealous men were peeking around the corner, and when they saw Daniel praying, they raced to tell the king.

Into the lions' den

When King Darius heard the news, his heart felt as heavy as iron. Daniel was his friend! All day long he tried to find a way to save him, but the law was the law. At last, with a sad and shaky voice, he gave the order.

Daniel was brought to the mouth of a deep, rocky pit. Down in the shadows, the lions prowled and growled, their golden eyes glowing in the dark and their tails swishing back and forth. The king put a trembling hand on Daniel's shoulder and said, "May your God, whom you serve so faithfully, rescue you." Then a great heavy stone was rolled over the opening, and everything went dark.

A night of miracles

Inside the den, Daniel could hear soft padded paws coming closer. He could feel the lions' warm breath. So he did what he always did — he knelt down and prayed. "Lord, I trust You to protect me."

And then something wonderful happened. A gentle light filled the den, soft and warm like a sunrise. It was an angel, sent by God! The lions' growls faded away. Their fierce eyes grew calm, and their big mouths closed tight. One lion stretched out beside Daniel, its thick golden fur soft and warm. Another curled up near his feet, purring a deep, rumbly purr.

Can you imagine that? Falling asleep leaning against a lion, cozy as a kitten! Daniel slept peacefully all night long while the stars twinkled above.

Joy in the morning

At the very first light of morning, King Darius ran to the den — the king himself, running in his royal slippers! "Daniel!" he called out, his voice trembling. "Servant of the living God! Has your God rescued you from the lions?"

For a moment, silence. Then, from down in the dark, came a strong, familiar voice: "O King, live forever! My God sent His angel to shut the lions' mouths. They have not hurt me at all."

"Daniel is alive!" the king shouted. "Lift him out at once!" And when Daniel came up into the sunshine, everyone gasped — there wasn't a single scratch on him. Not even a thread of his clothes was torn.

King Darius was so amazed that he sent a message to every corner of his kingdom: "The God of Daniel is the living God! His kingdom will never end. He rescues and saves His people!"

And Daniel went right on praying, three times a day, by his open window — just like always.
