A story about a big promise, a long journey, and a man who trusted God even without a map — written to be read aloud to little ones ages 3 to 8.
A long, long time ago, in a busy city called Haran, there lived a man named Abram — that was his first name, before God gave him a new one. Abram had a kind heart and a quiet, steady kind of faith, the sort that trusts even when things are uncertain.
One day, God spoke to Abram. "Leave your home," God said, "and go to a new land that I will show you. I will bless you, and one day your family will be as many as the stars in the sky."
A very big promise
Can you imagine? God did not hand Abram a map. He did not say exactly where the new land was, or how far, or how long it would take. He simply said, "Go, and I will show you."
That is a lot to trust! Have you ever been asked to do something before you knew exactly how it would turn out? That takes courage. And Abram had it, because he believed God would keep His promise.
So Abram packed up everything — his tents, his animals, his family, and his wife Sarai — and set off toward a land he had never seen.
The long road
The journey was long and dusty. Abram and his family walked over hills and across wide, dry plains. At night they set up their tents under a sky so full of stars it looked like someone had spilled a jar of glitter across the dark. And every time Abram looked up at those stars, he remembered God's promise: your family will be as many as these.
Some days were hard. The sun was hot, the water was far between wells, and the new land was still nowhere in sight. But Abram kept going, one step at a time, trusting that God was leading him exactly where he needed to go.
Arriving in the promised land
At last, Abram and his family came to a beautiful land called Canaan. God spoke again: "This is the land I am giving to your family." Abram was so thankful that he built an altar, a special place to say thank you to God, right there under the open sky.
God later gave Abram a brand-new name: Abraham, which means "father of many." And even though Abraham and Sarah were very old and had no children yet, God kept His promise in His own perfect time — and their family did grow, and grow, until it truly was as countless as the stars.
Abraham teaches us something wonderful: we do not have to see the whole road ahead to take the first step. We just have to trust the One who is leading us.

A note for parents
Scripture: Genesis 12. God's call to Abraham is the beginning of His covenant with a whole people — a promise made before there was any visible reason to believe it. For ages 3–8, the gentle takeaways are simple: God keeps His promises, faith means trusting God even when we can't see the whole plan, and it's okay to be brave and take the first step.
Talk about it together:
- God asked Abraham to go somewhere new without telling him exactly where. When is a time you had to trust a grown-up even though you didn't know what would happen?
- God promised Abraham a family as big as the stars. What is a promise you are waiting on right now?
- Abraham built an altar to say thank you to God. What is something you are thankful for today?
