Mary was going to marry a good man named Joseph, and she was very happy.

An angel visits Mary

One day, something very special happened. An angel from God named Gabriel came to visit Mary. He was bright and shining, and he filled the room with light that sparkled like stars twinkling in the night sky.

"Do not be afraid, Mary," the angel said. His voice was soft and gentle, like a warm hug. "I have come to bring you great news! God has chosen you to be the mother of His Son, Jesus."

Mary's heart was racing. "How could this be?" she wondered. But the angel told her, "With God, all things are possible!"

Mary took a deep breath and nodded. "I am the Lord's servant," she said. "Let it be as you have said."

Can you picture Mary standing there, brave and faithful?

The long road to Bethlehem

Time passed, and Mary and Joseph got ready for their special little baby. Then the Roman Emperor decided to count all the people in his kingdom. Everyone had to go to their hometown to be counted. For Mary and Joseph, that meant a long trip to a town called Bethlehem.

Imagine Mary riding on a donkey, her belly round with baby Jesus, bouncing up and down as they traveled. The path was rocky and rough, and the sun was hot. Mary could smell sweet flowers along the road and hear the birds chirping in the trees.

"Joseph," Mary said softly, "will we get there soon?"

Joseph was strong and kind. He smiled. "We will, Mary! The Lord is with us. Just keep holding on!"

When night fell, they finally reached Bethlehem. But oh no! The town was crowded, like when everyone comes home for the holidays. Mary and Joseph knocked on door after door, looking for a warm place to sleep. Every place was full.

A baby in the manger

At last, an innkeeper saw how tired they were. "I have no room," he said, "but you can stay in the stable. It's warm and safe."

A stable is like a little barn. There were cows munching on hay, and maybe even a sheep or two. The hay smelled fresh and sweet, and the animals made soft, sleepy sounds.

And that night, in the quiet stable, something amazing happened. Baby Jesus was born!

Mary wrapped Him snugly in soft bands of cloth. They didn't have baby pajamas back then. Then she laid Him in a manger, which is the box the animals eat their hay from. Mary looked down at her baby and felt more love in her heart than she ever thought possible.

Do you think baby Jesus cried? Yes, He did! Even though Jesus was God's Son, He was now a baby, just like you used to be.

Angels and shepherds

Out in the fields nearby, some shepherds were looking after their sheep. They were snuggled up around a small fire, sharing stories and laughing softly.

Suddenly, an angel appeared, and the sky filled with brilliant light. Can you imagine their surprise?

"Do not be afraid!" the angel said. "I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people! Today a Savior has been born. You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."

Then a whole crowd of angels appeared, singing, "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth!"

"Let's go to Bethlehem and see this baby!" the shepherds said. And off they went, running through the dark, their hearts pounding with joy.

When they reached the stable, they found Mary and Joseph and the baby, just as the angel had said. They knelt down beside Jesus. The stable was warm, and they could hear the soft sound of the baby breathing.

"What a special baby!" one shepherd said. "This baby is a gift from God!"

Mary treasured all these wonderful things in her heart.

The wise men follow the star

Far away in the East, some wise men were studying the stars. One night, they saw a bright star shining like never before.

"I believe it's a sign that a great King has been born," one of them said, his eyes sparkling. "We must follow it!"

So the wise men packed their camels with gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The gold was shiny and bright. The frankincense smelled like sweet spices. The myrrh was rich and deep, like warm honey. They traveled for many days, over mountains and deserts, with the twinkling star to guide them.

The star led them all the way to Bethlehem. When the wise men saw Jesus, they knelt down, just like the shepherds, and gave Him their gifts.

"This baby is indeed a King!" one wise man said.

The most wonderful story ever told

And that is the beginning of the most wonderful story ever told. God chose Mary to be the mother of His Son. He shared the good news with shepherds, with wise men, and with the whole world.

Jesus came to bring us joy, peace, and hope. So as you close your eyes tonight, remember that baby in the manger, and keep His love shining in your heart.

The End.

A note for parents

Scripture: Luke 1:26โ€“38 and Luke 2:1โ€“20, with the wise men from Matthew 2:1โ€“12. This bedtime version stays with the gentlest parts of the nativity: the angel's visit, the journey, the manger, the shepherds, and the star. For ages 2 to 8, the takeaways are simple. God keeps His promises, the good news was for everyone, and Jesus came because God loves us. Very little ones may only last through the manger scene, and that is a fine place to stop and say goodnight.
