The Birth of Jesus: The Christmas Story for Kids (Read Anytime)

A story about a long journey, a quiet stable, and the night the whole sky filled with angels — written to be read aloud to little ones ages 3 to 8.
A long, long time ago, in a little town called Nazareth, there lived a young woman named Mary. Mary loved God with all her heart. One day, an angel named Gabriel came to her with the most wonderful news in all the world.
"Do not be afraid, Mary," the angel said, his voice as gentle as a warm breeze. "God has chosen you for something very special. You are going to have a baby, and He will be God's own Son. You shall call Him Jesus."
The long journey to Bethlehem
Mary and her husband, Joseph, had to travel a long way to a town called Bethlehem. There were no cars back then, so Mary rode on the back of a small, patient donkey, clip-clopping along the dusty road while Joseph walked beside her.
It was a long trip, and by the time they reached Bethlehem, the town was crowded and the sky was dark. Mary was very tired, and the baby was ready to be born. Joseph knocked on door after door, looking for a place to stay. But every inn was full.
At last, a kind innkeeper said, "I have no rooms left, but you may stay in my stable, where the animals sleep." So that is where they went — into a warm, hay-filled stable, with gentle cows and woolly sheep for company.
The baby is born
And there, in that quiet stable, baby Jesus was born. Mary wrapped Him snugly in soft cloths and laid Him in a manger — the little wooden box the animals ate from — filled with fresh, sweet-smelling hay. It became the coziest cradle a baby ever had.
Can you imagine it? The most important baby in all the world, sleeping peacefully in a stable, watched over by his loving mother, his kind father, and a few sleepy animals.
Angels and shepherds
Out on the hillsides nearby, some shepherds were watching their sheep in the dark. Suddenly, the sky lit up brighter than day, and an angel appeared! The shepherds were amazed.
"Do not be afraid," the angel said. "I bring you good news of great joy. Today a Savior has been born! You will find Him wrapped in cloths, lying in a manger." Then the whole sky filled with angels, singing, "Glory to God! Peace on earth!" It was the most beautiful song the shepherds had ever heard.
The shepherds hurried to Bethlehem and found baby Jesus, just as the angel had said. They knelt down, full of wonder and joy.
And far away, wise men saw a bright new star in the sky and followed it for many miles, bringing gifts fit for a king. Everyone who came felt the same quiet happiness: something wonderful had happened. God's love had come into the world, small enough to hold.
